The first new span of the new Chain of Rocks Bridge has been completed, marking the midway point of the bridge's construction. Authorities with both IDOT and MODOT are calling the opening of the first span of the new bridge over the Mississippi River a significant milestone.

The Chain of Rocks Bridge, a vital link between St. Louis, Missouri, and Illinois, has reached a significant milestone with the opening of its new span, marking the halfway point in its reconstruction project. This bridge, originally built in 1929 and closed to vehicular traffic since 1966, is being transformed into a pedestrian and cycling path as part of the Confluence Greenway project. The new span, which opened recently, spans 1,400 feet and is designed to enhance safety and accessibility for users. The project not only aims to reconnect communities but also to provide a scenic route for recreation, linking to other trails and parks in the area. The completion of this phase signifies progress towards the bridge's full restoration, expected to be completed by 2026, enhancing the regional trail network and boosting local tourism.
