Thiruvananthapuram, January 8th, 2026 - Kerala's automotive landscape underwent a significant transformation in 2025, with vehicle registrations climbing 12.8% to reach 3.52 lakh - a substantial increase from the 3.12 lakh recorded in 2024. This growth isn't simply a reflection of increased vehicle ownership, but a clear indication of a thriving economy and, crucially, a rapidly evolving shift towards sustainable transportation.
The data, released today by the Motor Vehicles Department, reveals that while two-wheelers remain the dominant force in Kerala's vehicle population (accounting for 68.6% of all registrations), the most striking trend is the exponential rise in Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption. In 2025, EVs comprised a remarkable 15.27% of all new vehicle registrations - more than doubling the 6.28% share observed in the previous year. This leap positions Kerala as a frontrunner in India's burgeoning EV revolution.
Beyond two-wheelers and passenger cars (which made up 24.5% of registrations), the increase in goods carrier registrations - rising from 12,077 in 2024 to 13,923 in 2025 - suggests robust commercial activity and growth within the state's logistics sector. This indicates a broader economic upswing supporting increased mobility of goods and services.
Geographically, Thiruvananthapuram continues to be the hub for vehicle ownership, registering a leading 67,789 vehicles in 2025. Ernakulam followed closely with 62,794, and Kozhikode rounded out the top three with 41,613 registrations. These figures highlight the concentration of economic activity and population density within these urban centers, driving demand for personal and commercial vehicles.
Transport Commissioner Safirulla attributes the overall increase in vehicle registrations to a positive correlation with the state's economic performance and rising living standards. However, he specifically emphasizes the role of proactive government policies in fueling the EV surge. "The government's commitment to eco-friendly transportation has been pivotal," Safirulla stated. "Through a combination of tax exemptions, subsidies, and other incentives, we've successfully encouraged citizens to embrace electric mobility."
Kerala's ambitious target of having 10 lakh EVs on its roads by 2030 appears increasingly attainable given the current trajectory. This commitment is not merely aspirational; it aligns with national goals for reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable development. The state government has been actively investing in charging infrastructure to support the growing EV fleet, including the establishment of public charging stations and incentives for private charging point installations.
The rise of EVs in Kerala is also sparking innovation within the automotive sector. Local startups and established manufacturers are increasingly focusing on EV-related technologies and services, creating new employment opportunities and contributing to the state's technological advancement. The demand for skilled technicians capable of maintaining and repairing EVs is also growing, prompting educational institutions to introduce specialized training programs.
While the increase in vehicle ownership generally signals economic progress, it also presents challenges related to traffic congestion and infrastructure development. The Kerala government is concurrently investing in road improvements, public transportation systems, and smart traffic management technologies to mitigate these challenges and ensure a smooth and sustainable transportation ecosystem. Future plans include expanding the metro rail network and promoting the use of electric buses and other forms of public transport to reduce reliance on private vehicles.
The data from 2025 paints a dynamic picture of Kerala's transportation sector - one characterized by growth, innovation, and a clear commitment to a greener future. The sustained rise in EV adoption is a testament to the effectiveness of government policies and the growing awareness among citizens about the benefits of sustainable mobility.
