I-270 Overhaul Project Launched by CDOT

WESTMINSTER, Colorado - January 8, 2026 - The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has launched a public engagement initiative to gather feedback on a comprehensive project to overhaul and improve Interstate 270, a vital artery connecting Denver International Airport (DIA) to the Denver metro area. The project aims to address growing congestion, bolster safety, and enhance overall mobility along the heavily trafficked corridor.
I-270 has long been a critical component of the regional transportation network, but aging infrastructure and a consistent rise in traffic volume are creating challenges for commuters and impacting the efficiency of goods movement. CDOT recognizes the need for proactive improvements and is embarking on a thorough evaluation of potential solutions.
"I-270 is a critical transportation corridor in the Denver metro area. It connects Denver International Airport to the heart of the region," stated CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew. "As our state continues to grow, ensuring the efficient and safe movement of people and goods along this highway is paramount. We want to hear from the public to ensure any improvements truly address their needs and concerns."
The scope of the I-270 Improvement Project is broad, encompassing a range of potential upgrades. CDOT is currently considering several options, including the addition of new lanes to alleviate bottlenecking, substantial improvements to existing interchanges to streamline traffic flow, and the expansion of transit options to encourage alternatives to single-occupancy vehicle travel. The goal isn't simply to add capacity, but to create a more resilient, multi-modal transportation system.
This project comes at a crucial time for the Denver area. The region has experienced significant population growth in recent years, and that trend is expected to continue. This growth has naturally increased demand on all infrastructure, especially major highways like I-270. Furthermore, the increased volume of air travel through DIA necessitates a reliable and efficient connection to the rest of the metro area. Delays on I-270 not only frustrate commuters but also have economic consequences related to airport access and freight delivery.
CDOT is emphasizing a collaborative approach to this project, stressing the importance of public input in shaping the final design. They believe that incorporating the perspectives of those who use I-270 daily is essential to creating a solution that effectively addresses existing problems and anticipates future needs.
To facilitate public engagement, CDOT is offering multiple avenues for feedback:
- Online Survey: Accessible at https://www.codot.gov/projects/i270-improvement-project, the survey allows residents to share their experiences with I-270, identify problem areas, and suggest potential solutions.
- Virtual Meetings: CDOT will host virtual meetings on January 18th and January 25th, both at 6 p.m. These meetings will provide an opportunity for the public to learn more about the project, ask questions, and engage in a live discussion with CDOT officials.
- In-Person Event: An in-person event will be held at Westminster City Hall on February 1st, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This event will feature exhibits, presentations, and opportunities for one-on-one conversations with project team members.
CDOT is accepting public comments through February 2, 2026. All feedback received will be carefully considered as the project moves forward. The department anticipates that the planning and environmental review phases will take several months, followed by a construction timeline that could span multiple years. The final scope of the project, including specific improvements and timelines, will be determined based on the outcome of the public engagement process and technical feasibility studies. Residents are encouraged to participate actively in the process to help shape the future of this vital transportation corridor.
