Bluffton to Expand Public Transit with New Route & Park & Ride Upgrades
Locale: UNITED STATES

BLUFFTON, SC - March 27, 2026 - The Lowcountry Regional Transportation Authority (LRTA) today announced a significant proposal to expand public transportation options within Bluffton, South Carolina. The plan centers around the introduction of a new bus route, designated Route 10, and a substantial expansion of existing Park & Ride facilities. The initiative comes as Bluffton experiences unprecedented population growth, straining existing infrastructure and creating an urgent need for improved, accessible transportation solutions.
Currently, Bluffton's public transportation is largely served by Route 1, which primarily connects the town to Hilton Head Island. While valuable, this route offers limited localized service within Bluffton itself. The proposed Route 10 aims to fill this gap, focusing on the rapidly developing Buckwalter Parkway corridor. This key artery has become a hub for new residential developments, commercial businesses, and essential services, creating a concentrated demand for public transit options.
According to LRTA's preliminary route maps, Route 10 is envisioned to provide frequent stops along Buckwalter Parkway, connecting residential neighborhoods to shopping centers, healthcare facilities, and employment centers. Crucially, the route is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing regional connections, potentially allowing riders to transfer to other LRTA routes and access a wider network of destinations throughout the Lowcountry. This interconnectedness is a cornerstone of LRTA's long-term strategy to create a truly regional transportation system.
Beyond the new route, the proposed expansion of Park & Ride facilities is intended to address a critical bottleneck in public transportation utilization. Current Park & Ride locations, while functional, often reach capacity during peak hours, discouraging potential riders. The LRTA plans to significantly increase parking availability at key Park & Ride locations throughout Bluffton, and improve amenities to offer a more comfortable waiting experience. Proposed upgrades include covered shelters, real-time bus arrival information displays, enhanced lighting, and improved accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
"Bluffton is one of the fastest-growing towns in South Carolina, and we recognize the importance of proactively investing in public transportation to meet the needs of our residents," stated LRTA Executive Director Michael Wolfe during a press briefing this morning. "This isn't just about adding buses and parking spaces; it's about fostering sustainable growth, reducing traffic congestion, and ensuring everyone has access to reliable and affordable transportation options."
This proposal isn't occurring in a vacuum. Regional transportation planning experts predict continued population influx into the Lowcountry, meaning current infrastructure will be quickly overwhelmed without significant investment. Furthermore, rising fuel costs and growing environmental concerns are driving increased demand for public transportation alternatives. The LRTA's plan anticipates these trends and aims to position Bluffton as a leader in sustainable transportation.
The LRTA is making a concerted effort to gather community feedback before finalizing the proposal. A virtual public hearing was held tonight, Wednesday, March 27th, providing residents with a platform to voice their opinions and ask questions. In addition, an online survey, available until April 3rd, allows residents to submit their thoughts and suggestions at their convenience. The LRTA emphasizes that this is a collaborative process, and community input is essential to ensure the final plan effectively addresses local needs.
The success of this expansion relies heavily on community adoption. LRTA is currently exploring various outreach strategies to raise awareness of the new route and Park & Ride upgrades, including partnerships with local businesses, community organizations, and social media campaigns. They are also considering fare incentives and promotional programs to encourage ridership. The agency is also investigating the feasibility of electric buses for Route 10, aligning with the Lowcountry's commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
For more detailed information about the proposal, including route maps, public hearing schedules, and a link to the online survey, residents are encouraged to visit the LRTA website at www.lowcountryrta.com. The LRTA anticipates a final decision on the proposal will be made in late April, with implementation planned to begin in the fall of 2026.
