Once a vehicle exceeds these speeds, aerodynamic drag increases exponentially. The engine must work significantly harder to push through the air, leading to a sharp decline in fuel efficiency.

Leaving a vehicle idling in a parking lot or during short stops results in zero miles per gallon, contributing directly to increased costs without providing any utility.

The physical load of a vehicle directly impacts its energy requirements. Carrying unnecessary weight in the trunk or backseat increases the mass the engine must propel. While a few small items may seem negligible, a buildup of heavy equipment or cargo can noticeably decrease MPG.
Aerodynamics also factor into efficiency, especially at highway speeds. Roof racks, cargo carriers, and oversized spoilers create turbulence and drag. Removing these items when they are not in use streamlines the vehicle, allowing it to cut through the air with less resistance.
