India Launches Light Electric Vehicle (LEV) Centre of Excellence
Locale: INDIA

New Delhi, January 26, 2026 - A significant step towards a greener and more sustainable future for India has been taken with the formal launch of a dedicated Light Electric Vehicle (LEV) Centre of Excellence (CoE) in the Delhi-NCR region. Announced late last year, the collaboration between HMC, Hive, and KPIT Technologies represents a major investment in the burgeoning Indian LEV sector and aims to accelerate its growth by fostering innovation and localized solutions.
The initiative comes at a pivotal time. The Indian government's push for electrification, coupled with increasing consumer awareness regarding environmental concerns and rising fuel costs, has created a fertile ground for the adoption of LEVs. However, challenges remain - including the need for components and systems specifically adapted to the Indian climate, road conditions, and consumer preferences. This is where the newly established CoE steps in.
A Synergy of Expertise: The Power of Partnership
The CoE's strength lies in the complementary expertise each partner brings to the table. HMC, a recognized leader in electric vehicle components, provides foundational knowledge and experience in manufacturing and supply chain management. Hive contributes its advanced engineering solutions, focused on optimizing design and functionality. And KPIT Technologies, a global automotive engineering and software firm, lends its extensive capabilities in vehicle design, simulation, and software development - crucial for the integration and performance of LEV systems.
"The Indian LEV market presents unique opportunities and challenges," explains Arun Sharma, a senior analyst at Green Mobility Insights. "Simply importing existing EV designs from other markets isn't a sustainable strategy. A localized approach, informed by Indian conditions and consumer needs, is essential. This CoE addresses that directly."
The initial focus of the CoE will be on the development and rigorous testing of LEV components and systems. This includes areas like battery management systems, motor controllers, charging infrastructure compatibility, and vehicle chassis design tailored for Indian road conditions. The team will also be exploring innovative materials and manufacturing processes to reduce costs and improve performance.
Beyond Technology: Economic and Social Impact
The establishment of the LEV CoE isn't just about technological advancement; it's also expected to have a significant economic and social impact on the Delhi-NCR region. The CoE is projected to create numerous new jobs, ranging from engineering and research positions to manufacturing and support roles. Furthermore, it is anticipated to attract further investment into the region's EV ecosystem, encouraging the growth of related businesses and supporting industries.
"This is a long-term commitment," stated a spokesperson from KPIT Technologies during the initial announcement. "We see this CoE as a catalyst for innovation, not just for our own companies, but for the entire Indian LEV industry. It's about building local capabilities and fostering a culture of continuous improvement."
The CoE is also expected to contribute to the broader national goal of reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation. By accelerating the adoption of LEVs, the initiative will help to improve air quality, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and contribute to a healthier environment for all.
Future Outlook
The early successes of the LEV CoE are already drawing attention. Industry insiders speculate that similar partnerships and localized development hubs may emerge in other regions of India, further accelerating the nation's transition to electric mobility. The initial phase will concentrate on two- and three-wheeled LEVs, with potential expansion into small electric commercial vehicles in the future. The partners are also considering offering training programs and mentorship opportunities to nurture the next generation of Indian EV engineers and technicians.
This collaboration marks a key milestone in India's journey toward electric vehicle adoption, signifying a shift from mere imports to a future of indigenous innovation and manufacturing.
