Brunswick launching app-based transit service 'Brunswick Breeze' this fall

Brunswick Prepares to Roll Out “Brunswick Breeze,” an App‑Based Micro‑Transit System This Fall
The historic coastal city of Brunswick, Georgia, is set to launch an innovative, on‑demand transit service that promises to transform how residents and visitors move around the region. Dubbed “Brunswick Breeze,” the new system will become operational in the fall, offering riders a convenient, app‑driven way to hop into a shared vehicle, pick up destinations across the city’s 20‑mile network, and pay for rides—all with a tap of a screen.
What Brunswick Breeze Will Offer
At its core, Brunswick Breeze is a “micro‑transit” solution—a flexible, on‑demand service that bridges gaps left by the city’s traditional fixed‑route buses. Riders can download the free mobile app and request a ride from any point within the service zone. The system uses GPS and an algorithmic routing engine to match riders with available vehicles, ensuring pickups within 10–15 minutes for most requests. The app also provides real‑time updates on vehicle locations, estimated arrival times, and fare information.
The service will feature a fleet of 12 purpose‑built vans, each seating up to ten passengers. While the vehicles are smaller than standard city buses, they are spacious enough to accommodate luggage, strollers, and mobility aids. A subset of the fleet will be equipped with wheelchair lifts, making the system accessible to all residents.
Brunswick Breeze will operate from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. on weekdays and from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on weekends, with extended hours on holidays to support nightlife, festivals, and tourism. The initial service area will include downtown Brunswick, the historic district, the Brunswick Ferry Terminal, the 1,000‑acre Brunswick RiverWalk, the waterfront golf courses, and the city’s only airport—Brunswick Golden Isles Airport—providing seamless links between key destinations.
Funding and Partnerships
The project is made possible by a blend of local, state, and federal funding. The city secured a $1.2 million grant from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) under its “Smart Mobility Initiative,” a program aimed at encouraging municipalities to adopt technology‑enabled transit solutions. The grant covers vehicle procurement, app development, and initial operating costs for the first year.
The city also tapped into a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) “High‑Quality Transit” program, which supports the deployment of flexible, demand‑responsive transit in communities lacking conventional bus services. In addition, the local economic development office will allocate $200,000 in discretionary funds to help subsidize fares during the pilot phase.
A key element of the initiative is the partnership with Breezy Mobility, a Georgia‑based tech firm that specializes in on‑demand transit platforms. Breezy Mobility will provide the app’s backend infrastructure, maintenance services, and analytics tools that enable the city to track performance metrics such as average wait time, vehicle utilization, and rider satisfaction.
“We are thrilled to partner with Breezy Mobility to bring a modern, responsive transit option to our community,” said City Manager Karen Mitchell. “The platform’s data analytics will help us continuously improve service, adjust routes, and ultimately create a more efficient transportation network that meets the needs of Brunswick’s residents and tourists alike.”
Community Impact and Future Plans
Brunswick’s existing transit system, operated by the Brunswick County Transit Authority, currently offers three fixed routes that run on a limited schedule. While the service has been essential for seniors and low‑income residents, it has struggled to attract younger riders and has limited connectivity to the city’s growing tourism sector.
Brunswick Breeze aims to fill those gaps. By offering a flexible, fare‑based service, the city hopes to attract tourists who need reliable transportation between hotels, the waterfront, and the historic downtown. The service is also expected to reduce traffic congestion and parking demand in the city center, as more people opt for shared rides instead of personal vehicles.
The city plans to evaluate the pilot program after six months, using data collected through the app to assess ridership patterns, average wait times, and revenue. Depending on performance, the city will consider expanding the service zone, increasing vehicle capacity, and adding premium “comfort” vehicles for high‑income or special‑needs riders.
“We see Brunswick Breeze as the first step toward a smarter, more connected city,” said Mayor Mike Jones. “Our goal is to create a transportation system that is inclusive, efficient, and ready for the future. By leveraging technology, we’re not only improving mobility today but also laying the groundwork for a greener, more sustainable Brunswick tomorrow.”
Looking Ahead
The launch of Brunswick Breeze is scheduled for the beginning of September, with a ribbon‑cutting ceremony slated for a downtown community event. Residents can download the app from the iOS App Store or Google Play at the launch, and the city will offer a complimentary first ride to a select group of community volunteers to test the system.
For more information about the project, residents can visit the city’s transportation page (https://www.brunswickga.gov/transportation) or the Breezy Mobility website (https://www.breezymobility.com). The Georgia Department of Transportation’s page on Smart Mobility provides further context on state funding and similar projects across the state (https://gdot.org/smartmobility).
Brunswick’s venture into app‑based transit marks a bold move toward a future where mobility is no longer a chore but a seamless part of everyday life. As the city breathes new life into its streets, the promise of Brunswick Breeze offers a breath of fresh air for all who call the Golden Isles home.
