  • The city of Austin is still waiting to see if it will have $105 million to build a key "cap" over the Texas Department of Transportation's I-35 expansion project, but an announcement Tuesday from Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Sam Graves (R-MO) makes that likelihood seem smaller.

The city of Austin is still awaiting a decision on a $105 million federal grant aimed at improving public safety and reducing gun violence, as reported by the Austin American-Statesman. The grant, part of the Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program, was applied for in May 2023, with the city hoping to use the funds to enhance its forensic science department, support the 911 call center, and expand the integrated care team for mental health crisis response. Despite the delay, optimism remains as the city has been actively communicating with the U.S. Department of Justice, and a decision is expected soon. The grant's approval would significantly bolster Austin's efforts to address public safety and mental health challenges.
