SR-144 Spur Erosion Threatens Road Stability in Ringgold

RINGGOLD, Ga. (March 5, 2026) - The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is actively soliciting public input as it addresses a rapidly deteriorating embankment along SR-144 Spur in Catoosa County. The erosion, described by GDOT officials as "severe," is causing considerable anxiety amongst local residents and poses a potential threat to the long-term stability of the roadway itself.

The affected stretch of SR-144 Spur, a vital connector for the Ringgold community, has been experiencing increasing erosion over the past several months. While the precise cause is still under investigation, preliminary assessments point to a combination of unusually heavy rainfall in the 2025 season, increased traffic volume, and potentially, underlying geological factors contributing to the land slippage. The erosion has progressed to a point where the structural integrity of the road is now at risk, prompting GDOT to fast-track a remediation plan.

"Safety is our paramount concern," stated Maria Sanchez, GDOT spokesperson, in a press conference earlier today. "We are committed to ensuring the continued safe passage for drivers on SR-144 Spur, and addressing this erosion issue is a critical step in achieving that goal. However, we recognize the importance of community involvement. This project will impact the residents of Ringgold, and their insights are invaluable as we move forward."

GDOT is currently evaluating several stabilization measures, including the construction of retaining walls, the installation of large riprap systems (boulders designed to absorb wave or current energy), and potentially, the implementation of bioengineering techniques utilizing native vegetation to reinforce the embankment. The chosen solution will need to balance effectiveness, cost, and minimal disruption to the surrounding environment. Engineers are also exploring the possibility of improved drainage systems to divert water away from the vulnerable area, preventing further erosion.

To facilitate open communication and gather feedback from the public, GDOT will host a public meeting on March 12th at 6:00 p.m. at the Ringgold Community Center, located at 4102 Main Street, Ringgold. The meeting will provide a detailed overview of the project scope, proposed solutions, potential timelines, and anticipated impacts. Representatives from GDOT's engineering and environmental divisions will be present to answer questions and address concerns from residents. Visual aids, including detailed maps and renderings of the proposed stabilization measures, will also be available.

For those unable to attend the meeting in person, GDOT is offering alternative channels for providing input. Comments can be submitted online through the GDOT website at [ dot.ga.gov ], specifically under the 'Projects' tab. Citizens can also mail their comments to GDOT's District 1 Office. GDOT assures the public that all submitted feedback will be carefully considered as they finalize the remediation plan. The deadline for submitting comments is March 19th, 2026.

This isn't the first time GDOT has tackled significant erosion problems in the region. In 2024, a similar project was successfully completed on Highway 27, involving the stabilization of a failing hillside. That project utilized a combination of retaining walls and bioengineering, proving to be both effective and environmentally sensitive. GDOT intends to leverage the lessons learned from that experience on the SR-144 Spur project.

Beyond the immediate stabilization of the embankment, GDOT is also investigating potential long-term solutions to mitigate future erosion risks. This includes a comprehensive assessment of the surrounding terrain and hydrological patterns. They are working with the US Army Corps of Engineers to explore potential flood control measures further upstream that could reduce the amount of runoff impacting the SR-144 Spur corridor. The aim is not just to fix the current problem, but to prevent future incidents and ensure the longevity of this critical infrastructure.

The SR-144 Spur project is a testament to GDOT's ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving Georgia's transportation network. By proactively addressing this erosion issue and actively engaging the community, GDOT hopes to deliver a solution that safeguards the roadway, protects local residents, and ensures a safe and reliable transportation experience for all.
