I-5 Closures in Puyallup to Cause Overnight Delays
Locale: UNITED STATES

Puyallup Residents Brace for Extended I-5 Disruptions as Major Upgrade Project Enters Critical Phase
Puyallup, WA - Drivers in and around Puyallup are facing a week of overnight highway closures and significant delays as the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) presses forward with its multi-year project to overhaul I-5 between Federal Way and Tacoma. The current phase, focusing on maintenance and upgrades near the Puyallup and Fife areas, has triggered a series of nightly closures impacting both northbound and southbound traffic.
Starting Monday, February 2nd, and continuing through Thursday, February 5th, 2026, I-5 northbound lanes will be completely shut down between Puyallup and Fife from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM each night. These extended closures are necessary, according to WSDOT, to facilitate critical repairs and improvements to the heavily trafficked corridor. In addition to the lane closures, several on-ramps and off-ramps, including the southbound Puyallup River Road exit, are also being temporarily closed to allow crews unimpeded access to the highway.
"We understand these closures create a burden for commuters, and we don't take that lightly," stated WSDOT spokesperson Laura Russo in a press release issued earlier today. "However, these investments are vital to ensuring the long-term safety and reliability of our transportation system. We are working diligently to minimize disruptions and complete the work as efficiently as possible."
The ambitious I-5 improvement project, which began several years ago, addresses a multitude of issues plaguing the key transportation artery. Initial phases focused on resurfacing aging pavement, repairing deteriorating bridges, and widening sections to alleviate congestion. The current work is centered around enhancing safety features, including improved signage, updated lighting, and the implementation of advanced traffic management systems.
While WSDOT maintains the project is essential, the prolonged construction has understandably sparked frustration among residents and businesses. The nightly closures exacerbate existing commute times, forcing drivers to seek alternative routes or endure substantial delays. Local businesses, particularly those relying on overnight deliveries or early morning customer traffic, are reporting logistical challenges.
"It's tough," said Maria Sanchez, owner of a bakery located near the Puyallup River Road exit. "We have deliveries that come in at 3 AM, and now they're having to take a much longer route, adding significant time and cost to our operations. We appreciate the need for improvements, but the communication about these closures could be better. More advance notice would help us plan accordingly."
WSDOT acknowledges the concerns and emphasizes its commitment to providing real-time updates. Drivers are strongly encouraged to check the WSDOT website ([ https://wsdot.wa.gov/ ]) and follow WSDOT's social media channels (Twitter: @wsdot, Facebook: Washington State Department of Transportation) for the latest information on closures, detours, and traffic conditions. The agency also utilizes its Go Kits app to provide drivers with customized traffic alerts based on their location and frequently traveled routes.
Looking ahead, WSDOT anticipates the I-5 project will continue well into 2026, with further phases planned to address specific bottlenecks and enhance overall corridor capacity. Future work includes the construction of auxiliary lanes in key areas, the implementation of high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes, and the exploration of innovative technologies to optimize traffic flow. The ultimate goal is to create a more efficient, safer, and sustainable transportation system for the Puget Sound region. For those impacted by the current closures, WSDOT recommends exploring alternate routes such as Highway 512 or Pacific Highway South. However, drivers should be aware that these alternate routes may also experience increased traffic volume due to the I-5 closures.
