'Unfortunate' gagging order against Chinese journalist lifted

Case demonstrates the danger of "without notice" applications being made under the Harmful Digital Communications Act, judge says.

The gagging order against Chinese journalist Yuyu Dong, who was reporting on the case of a Chinese woman seeking asylum in New Zealand, has been lifted by the Auckland High Court. The woman, referred to as "Ms Chen," had accused her former employer, a Chinese businessman, of sexual harassment and claimed that her life was in danger if she returned to China. The businessman had obtained an injunction preventing Dong from publishing any information about the case, but Justice Gerard van Bohemen ruled that the injunction was an unjustified restriction on freedom of expression and lifted it, allowing Dong to continue his reporting.
