Pulaski County Workforce Program Serves as Regional Model
Locale: UNITED STATES

PULASKI COUNTY, Va. (April 1st, 2026) - A pioneering initiative in Pulaski County is proving to be a model for workforce development in Southwest Virginia, equipping students with the cutting-edge skills needed to thrive in an increasingly high-tech economy. The program, now in its second full year of operation, has expanded beyond its initial scope, and is demonstrably impacting regional employment trends.
Launched in late 2024, the program began as a collaboration between the Pulaski County School District, a consortium of local businesses - including advanced manufacturers, tech startups, and cybersecurity firms - and the Southwest Virginia Workforce Development Board. It was conceived as a direct response to a growing skills gap identified by regional economic development officials. The initial assessment revealed a significant mismatch between the skills possessed by the existing workforce and the requirements of industries looking to establish or expand in the area. This wasn't simply about needing more workers; it was about needing workers with very specific, advanced skills.
"We saw the writing on the wall," explains Sarah Johnson, now the Superintendent of Pulaski County Schools, but Principal at the program's inception. "Southwest Virginia has immense potential, but to truly capitalize on the opportunities presented by the evolving economic landscape, we needed to proactively prepare our students for the jobs of tomorrow, not the jobs of yesterday. Simply put, we needed to shift from a curriculum focused on traditional trades to one that embraces advanced technology."
The program's core curriculum centers around three key areas: advanced manufacturing (including CNC machining, 3D printing, and industrial automation), robotics (covering design, construction, programming, and maintenance of robotic systems), and cybersecurity (focusing on network security, data protection, and ethical hacking). Students aren't just learning theoretical concepts; they're immersed in hands-on projects that mirror real-world challenges. For example, students in the advanced manufacturing track recently completed a project designing and building a prototype for a smart sensor used in local coal mine safety systems. The robotics team is currently working on automating a portion of the local food bank's sorting and packaging process. The cybersecurity students are proactively performing penetration testing for local businesses, under the supervision of certified professionals.
David Miller, VP of Operations at Appalachian Tech Solutions, one of the original partnering businesses, notes a dramatic shift in the quality of applicants the company receives. "Two years ago, we were struggling to find qualified candidates for even entry-level tech positions. Now, we're consistently seeing applications from Pulaski County students who already possess industry-recognized certifications - things like Certified Associate of Manufacturing (CAM) or CompTIA Security+. It's significantly reduced our training costs and improved the overall skill level of our workforce."
The program's success has spurred significant expansion. What began as a pilot program for high school seniors has now been integrated into the curriculum for students as young as ninth grade, offering specialized career pathways from the start of their high school journey. The school district has invested in state-of-the-art equipment, transforming existing classrooms into fully equipped tech labs. Furthermore, the Southwest Virginia Workforce Development Board has secured additional funding to offer scholarships for students pursuing advanced certifications and college degrees in related fields. A key addition in 2026 has been the establishment of a dedicated "Innovation Hub" - a co-working space on the Pulaski County High School campus where students can collaborate with industry professionals on real-world projects.
The program's impact is extending beyond Pulaski County. Neighboring school districts are now sending representatives to observe the program and explore opportunities for replication. The Southwest Virginia Workforce Development Board is actively working to establish similar partnerships in other counties, aiming to create a regional network of tech-focused education and training programs. The future of Southwest Virginia's workforce looks brighter than ever, with Pulaski County leading the charge into a new era of economic prosperity.
