NASHUA, N.H. - February 10, 2026 - The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched a full investigation into a significant explosion and subsequent fire that ripped through a commercial building in Nashua, New Hampshire, today. The incident, occurring on Tuesday, February 10th, has raised immediate concerns about the safety of aging propane infrastructure across the nation and the potential for similar events. While the immediate cause appears to be a ruptured propane tank, the investigation aims to uncover contributing factors ranging from maintenance protocols to regulatory oversight.

The explosion, which occurred earlier this afternoon, caused extensive damage to the impacted building - currently identified as a regional distribution center for 'Evergreen Supply Co.', a supplier of horticultural and landscaping materials. Emergency responders were immediately dispatched to the scene, initiating evacuations of the surrounding area and providing medical assistance to the injured. The number of injured currently stands at seven, with two reported in critical condition.

"We received multiple 911 calls reporting a large explosion and visible flames," stated Nashua Fire Chief Robert Davies during a press conference held near the scene. "Our crews worked quickly to contain the fire, but the initial blast caused significant structural damage. We are grateful for the swift response from mutual aid departments across the region."

The NTSB's "go-team," comprised of experts in hazardous materials, structural engineering, and fire investigation, is now on-site. Their task is multifaceted, encompassing a thorough examination of the blast site, analysis of recovered propane tank fragments, and interviews with witnesses, Evergreen Supply Co. personnel, and first responders. The team will be meticulously reconstructing the sequence of events leading up to the explosion.

"Our focus isn't simply on what happened, but why it happened and, most crucially, how to prevent similar incidents in the future," explained NTSB spokesperson Jennifer Hayes. "We'll be looking at the age and maintenance history of the propane tanks involved, the storage procedures in place at the facility, and adherence to relevant safety regulations."

The preliminary investigation suggests that a single propane tank ruptured, triggering the explosion. However, investigators are not ruling out the possibility of contributing factors. Experts point to a growing national concern regarding aging propane tanks, particularly those used for commercial applications. Many tanks, particularly in older facilities, may be nearing the end of their service life, potentially becoming susceptible to corrosion and structural failure. The lack of consistent, nationwide inspection protocols adds to the risk.

"While propane is generally a safe fuel when handled correctly, tanks are subject to wear and tear, and corrosion from the elements," stated Dr. Emily Carter, a materials science expert at MIT. "Regular, non-destructive testing is crucial to identify potential weaknesses before they lead to catastrophic failures. Unfortunately, many smaller businesses and municipalities lack the resources or expertise to conduct such tests effectively."

This incident in Nashua comes on the heels of a similar, albeit smaller, propane-related incident in Oklahoma City last month, prompting calls for a review of federal and state regulations governing propane storage and handling. Senator Maria Cantwell, Chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, has already announced plans to hold hearings on the matter.

The NTSB investigation is expected to be a lengthy process, potentially taking several months to complete. The agency will issue a preliminary report within weeks, followed by a more comprehensive final report detailing its findings and safety recommendations. The report will likely address issues such as tank inspection frequencies, enhanced safety training for propane handlers, and the potential need for stricter regulations regarding the use of aging propane infrastructure. The economic impact on Evergreen Supply Co. is also expected to be substantial, with the facility likely facing months of reconstruction and lost revenue. Beyond the immediate damage, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proactive safety measures and the potential consequences of neglecting critical infrastructure maintenance.
