The sales were further categorized across three key vehicle types:

  • Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs): Led the charge with 98,712 units sold, demonstrating the increasing appeal of fully electric mobility amongst Malaysian consumers. This segment has seen the most significant growth year-on-year, largely due to advancements in battery technology and a wider range of models becoming available.
  • Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs): Accounted for 47,356 sales. PHEVs offer a crucial bridge for consumers still hesitant to fully commit to electric driving, providing the flexibility of a gasoline engine for longer journeys while leveraging electric power for daily commutes.
  • Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs): Registered 39,260 units sold. These vehicles, offering a combination of gasoline and electric power, remain a popular choice due to their established technology and fuel efficiency.

Government Support and Infrastructure Key to Growth

The remarkable growth in EV and hybrid vehicle sales isn't happening in a vacuum. The MAA directly attributes the positive trend to sustained government initiatives. Generous tax breaks and subsidies have significantly reduced the initial purchase price of EVs and hybrids, making them more accessible to a wider range of consumers. Furthermore, the ongoing expansion of Malaysia's charging infrastructure - the network of public charging stations - is playing a vital role in alleviating "range anxiety," a primary concern for potential EV buyers. The government's commitment to increasing the availability of charging points, particularly in urban areas and along major highways, is proving to be a critical enabler of EV adoption.

Beyond Incentives: Consumer Awareness and Model Variety

While financial incentives and infrastructure are crucial, the MAA's report also highlights the impact of public awareness campaigns.
