Louisiana State Police helicopter transports escaped inmates to different facility

On April 20, 2023, two inmates, Travon Johnson and Lester Mitchell, escaped from a transport van in New Orleans and were later apprehended by Louisiana State Police after a helicopter-assisted search. The escape occurred around 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of Franklin and St. Claude avenues. The inmates were on their way to court when they managed to escape. After a brief manhunt, the Louisiana State Police Aviation Unit located the suspects around 7:30 a.m. in the 2700 block of Pauger Street. Both were taken into custody without incident and returned to the custody of the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office.
