Belle Chasse Marine Expands Operations with New Metairie Headquarters

Belle Chasse Marine Expands Operations with New Metairie Headquarters
Belle Chasse Marine, the family‑owned ship repair and marine services company that has been a cornerstone of Louisiana’s maritime industry for more than 45 years, announced on Thursday that it has purchased a former office tower in Metairie and will relocate its headquarters to the new 20‑story building. The move, which is part of the company’s broader strategy to grow its service footprint and better serve the growing commercial fishing, offshore energy and yacht markets in the Gulf of Mexico, is slated to be completed by the end of the year.
A Strategic Acquisition
The 100‑000‑square‑foot building, located on the corner of St. Charles Avenue and LaSalle Avenue, had previously housed a regional bank and several professional services firms before its vacancy in 2021. Belle Chasse Marine’s purchase price of $12.3 million was financed through a combination of equity, a bank loan and a $1.2 million tax abatement granted by the City of Metairie. The building’s prime location—just a short drive from the New Orleans Port Authority and the nearby industrial parks—provides the company with easy access to the Gulf Coast’s commercial shipping lanes and the burgeoning offshore wind industry.
“We saw an opportunity to bring our operations into the heart of the metropolitan area, while also taking advantage of the city’s incentives for businesses that create jobs and invest in local infrastructure,” said company president and CEO, James “Jim” McBride, in a statement. “This new headquarters will serve as a hub for our engineering, logistics, and customer‑service teams, and it will allow us to better support the vessels that keep Louisiana’s economy afloat.”
Expanding Services and Workforce
Belle Chasse Marine has traditionally focused on dry‑dock repair, hull maintenance and engine overhauls for commercial fishing vessels and small‑to‑medium sized cargo ships. The new Metairie facility will house an expanded workshop, a state‑of‑the‑art fabrication lab, and a dedicated space for the company’s recently launched “Marine Safety Consulting” division, which offers compliance audits and crew training for the offshore energy sector.
The expansion is expected to create 25 new jobs—15 technical positions and 10 support roles—over the next two years. “The Gulf of Mexico is experiencing a renaissance, especially with the rise of offshore wind and petrochemical projects,” McBride added. “Our goal is to be the go‑to partner for all of those companies, and to do that we need a larger, modernized base.”
Community Impact and Economic Development
City officials in Metairie welcomed the purchase, noting that the new headquarters would bring high‑skill jobs to the area and help to anchor the neighborhood’s redevelopment efforts. Metairie’s Planning Director, Karen Rodriguez, emphasized the positive impact on the local economy. “We’re thrilled to have Belle Chasse Marine back in the city. Their investment is a strong vote of confidence in our community and we look forward to watching the company thrive.”
Local businesses along St. Charles Avenue have already begun to anticipate the ripple effects. The adjacent coffee shop, “Café Mêlée,” noted that they expect an increase in foot traffic from the company’s staff and visitors. “We’re excited to serve a new group of people,” said café owner Maya Singh. “They’ll be the kind of folks who appreciate artisanal coffee and will support the neighborhood.”
A Look Forward
The new headquarters marks a milestone in Belle Chasse Marine’s evolution from a regional repair shop to a vertically integrated marine solutions provider. The company’s leadership has already outlined a five‑year plan that includes further expansion into the Gulf Coast, the addition of a marine research lab, and partnerships with universities for workforce development.
“We’re at a pivotal moment,” McBride said. “The combination of our rich heritage, the new facilities, and the talent in the region positions us perfectly to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead.”
With the acquisition now finalized, Belle Chasse Marine is poised to launch its next phase of growth from its new Metairie headquarters, reinforcing its role as a key player in Louisiana’s maritime industry while contributing to the economic vitality of the Greater New Orleans region.
