Ford Launches 'FocusDrive' to Combat Distracted Driving
Locales: UNITED STATES, CANADA, MEXICO

DEARBORN, MI - February 9th, 2026 - Ford Motor Company today announced the launch of "FocusDrive," a cutting-edge driver monitoring and assistance system designed to dramatically reduce accidents caused by distracted or inattentive driving. Building upon years of investment in driver-assistance technologies, FocusDrive represents a significant leap forward in proactive safety, utilizing a network of sensors and sophisticated software to augment driver awareness and mitigate potential hazards.
The announcement comes at a critical time. Despite increasing public awareness campaigns and advancements in vehicle safety, distracted driving remains a persistent and deadly problem. According to data released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) last year, over 3,500 people were killed and nearly 400,000 injured in crashes involving distracted drivers. These statistics highlight the urgent need for more effective solutions - solutions Ford believes FocusDrive provides.
"Our goal is to provide drivers with the support they need to stay safe and focused while driving," stated Steve Donahue, Director of Ford Driving Assistance Technologies, during a press conference earlier today. "FocusDrive isn't about replacing the driver; it's about enhancing their capabilities. It's an intelligent co-pilot, providing an extra layer of security and awareness."
How FocusDrive Works: A Multi-Sensor Approach
Unlike previous generations of driver-assistance systems which largely focused on reacting after a hazard was detected, FocusDrive employs a proactive, multi-layered approach. The system integrates several key technologies:
- High-Resolution Radar & Lidar: Provides a 360-degree view of the vehicle's surroundings, accurately identifying and tracking objects up to 200 meters away. This allows FocusDrive to anticipate potential collisions well in advance.
- Advanced Camera System: Utilizes a suite of interior and exterior cameras. The exterior cameras feed data to the object detection algorithms, while an interior camera, equipped with sophisticated eye-tracking and head-pose estimation, monitors the driver's gaze and alertness levels. This technology can detect signs of drowsiness, inattention, or even medical emergencies.
- AI-Powered Predictive Software: The core of FocusDrive is its artificial intelligence engine, trained on millions of miles of real-world driving data. This AI anticipates potential hazards by analyzing driving patterns, road conditions, and the behavior of surrounding vehicles and pedestrians. It can predict, for example, a pedestrian stepping into the crosswalk or a vehicle making an abrupt lane change.
- Haptic Feedback System: Beyond visual and audible alerts, FocusDrive incorporates subtle haptic feedback through the steering wheel and driver's seat. This can provide gentle nudges to correct steering or alert the driver to a hazard without causing startle reactions.
Beyond Basic Alerts: Intelligent Assistance
FocusDrive goes beyond simply alerting the driver to potential dangers. In certain situations, the system can also provide intelligent assistance. For example, if the driver appears drowsy or distracted, the system can gently steer the vehicle back into its lane or even initiate a controlled slowing maneuver. However, Ford emphasizes that these interventions are designed to be subtle and supportive, never overriding the driver's control unless absolutely necessary.
Availability and Future Outlook
Ford plans to initially roll out FocusDrive on its 2027 model year Explorer and F-150 vehicles. Expanded availability to other models is expected throughout 2028. While Ford hasn't announced specific pricing details, the company estimates that FocusDrive will add approximately $1,500 - $3,000 to the vehicle's MSRP, depending on the trim level and selected options.
Donahue also hinted at future developments, including potential integration with smart city infrastructure and over-the-air software updates to improve system performance and add new features. "We see FocusDrive as a platform for continuous innovation in driver safety," he explained. "We're committed to making our roads safer for everyone, and this is just the beginning."
Ford's existing suite of safety features - automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring - will continue to be offered and will be seamlessly integrated with the enhanced capabilities of FocusDrive, creating a comprehensive safety ecosystem.
