J.D. Power Study Finds Vehicles Built During Pandemic Continue to Frustrate Owners

The J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Initial Quality Study revealed that vehicles built during the height of the global health crisis continue to present significant quality issues for owners. The study, which surveyed over 93,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2023 model-year vehicles after 90 days of ownership, found that the average number of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) was 192, marking a slight improvement from the previous year but still indicating ongoing challenges. Key issues include problems with technology, such as infotainment systems, and manufacturing defects like poor fit and finish, attributed to the disruptions in production and supply chains during the peak of the automotive industry's struggles with the global health crisis. Notably, electric vehicles (EVs) and premium brands experienced higher rates of issues, with EVs having 240 PP100 compared to 180 for internal combustion engine vehicles, highlighting the complexities in producing new technology under strained conditions.
