The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York City is set to test new subway turnstiles at specific stations as part of a broader initiative to reduce fare evasion, which costs the system approximately $700 million annually. These new turnstiles, designed to be more difficult to jump over or squeeze through, will be installed at the Sutphin Boulevard-Archer Avenue-JFK Airport and Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center stations starting in May 2025. The design aims to enhance security and efficiency, with features that prevent common evasion techniques. The MTA hopes that these turnstiles, along with other measures like increased enforcement and public awareness campaigns, will help recover lost revenue and improve the overall transit experience for riders.
