"I've been doing this job for 32 years now," Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said. "I've never heard of a school bus driver being intoxicated, let alone this high."
A bus driver from Norris Public Schools, identified as 63-year-old Michael Hynes, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence while transporting students. The incident occurred on September 13, 2023, when Hynes was driving students home from school. A concerned parent reported the situation to the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office after observing the bus's erratic driving. Upon investigation, deputies found Hynes showing signs of intoxication, and he failed field sobriety tests. Hynes was subsequently arrested and charged with DUI, with his blood alcohol content measured at .207, over twice the legal limit. No students were harmed during the incident, and the school district is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
