Both companies say they are operating with Level 4 automation. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), that means the vehicles are responsible "for driving tasks within limited service areas while occupants act only as passengers and do not need to be engaged."
Two companies, Aurora Innovation and Kodiak Robotics, have started testing driverless commercial trucks in the Houston area, specifically along a 240-mile route between Houston and Dallas. These autonomous trucks, which operate without human drivers, are part of a pilot program aimed at demonstrating the safety and efficiency of self-driving technology in commercial freight transport.
