Private bus operators in West Bengal called off their strike on June 19, 2024, after successful negotiations with Transport Minister Snehasis Chakraborty. The strike, which began on June 18, was in response to a new hit-and-run law under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which imposes severe penalties including up to 10 years in prison or a fine of Rs 7 lakh for drivers involved in accidents who flee the scene. The operators agreed to resume services following assurances from the minister that their concerns would be addressed, and a committee would be formed to look into the issues raised by the operators.
